What is the NDIS?

Changing the way disability supports are delivered

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to empower people with disability to work towards their goals, to identify the disability related support they need to meet their goals, and to choose where they would like to buy their supports. It's changed the way that disability services are delivered in Australia because you now have a choice of service providers in an open market, giving you more choice and control.

Am I Eligible For NDIS Funding?

If you live in Australia and are born with or acquire a permanent or significant disability, you may be eligible for NDIS funding. You also need to be between the ages of 7 and 65 and be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent residence visa. To qualify for specific supports like home modifications or assistive technology you may require a needs assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question related to the NDIS? Here are our most commonly-asked questions.

  • What Are The Disability Requirements For The NDIS?

To meet the disability requirements for NDIS funding, the NDIS requires evidence your disability is caused by at least one of the following impairments:

    • intellectual – such as how you speak and listen, read and write, solve problems, and process and remember information
    • cognitive – such as how you think, learn new things, use judgment to make decisions, and pay attention
    • neurological – such as how your body functions
    • sensory – such as how you see or hear
    • physical – such as the ability to move parts of your body.

You may also be eligible for the NDIS if you have a psychosocial disability. This means you have reduced capacity to do daily life activities and tasks due to your mental health.

  • What Is An NDIS Service Agreement?

A Service Agreement is handy to ensure that both the NDIS provider and participant are on the same page when it comes to the delivery of supports. A written service agreement is recommended by the NDIA, but is only specifically required for Specialist Disability Accommodation supports under the NDIS rules. For other NDIS services, the NDIA does not require written service agreements.

  • What Should A Service Agreement Include?

    A service agreement should include:

    • the type of supports that will be provided
    • the cost of those supports and total dollar value of service to be provided
    • the payment terms
    • consent for the creation of service bookings
    • how, when and where the participant requires the supports to be delivered
    • how long the participant requires the supports to be provided
    • when and how the Service Agreement will be reviewed
    • how the participant and provider will deal with any problems, compliants or questions that may arise
    • what the participant’s responsibilities are under the Service Agreement
    • what the provider’s responsibilities are under the Service Agreement
    • what notice is needed for the participant or provider to change or end the Service Agreement and how this is done.
  • What is An NDIS Plan?

In general, your NDIS plan should outline information on your goals, aspirations and the kind of support you need. Your plan contains information that has arisen in your planning meeting with the NDIA or your Local Area Coordinator (LAC). There will be some information about you, your disability, what you do on a day-to-day basis and your living arrangements. It may also include the names of friends and family that currently provide support for you, and any services and community groups that you are connected to.

Your NDIS goals will be listed, including your short- and long-term goals and the supports you may need to achieve these.

It will also mention funding amounts, including how much is needed for each support category and a recommendation on how to use the funding provided. This funding is based on what is reasonable and necessary for you to achieve your goals under NDIS supports.

  • How Do I Apply To The NDIS?

Essentially, you can make a verbal application by calling 1800 800 110 or complete an Access Request Form. You will be asked to provide supporting evidence regarding your disability.
